Career Counselling
Shirley Leon has taught Career Counselling, and Career and Personal Planning for the UBC Counselling Psychology Program.  She has worked as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counsellor and done a lot of Career Counselling with individuals in different settings.

Career counselling with a person trained at the doctoral level in psychology is superior in a number of ways.  Most importantly, clients benefit from developing an awareness of what may be hindering them in making meaningful and empowering decisions and in knowing and realizing their true potential.  This awareness is the first step towards making changes.  Change itself can be more readily facilitated when working with a counsellor that has an advanced knowledge of how to help people change.  Career counselling with Dr. Leon goes beyond the "matching" approach that so many people find unsatisfactory.  It can help you explore your true self, gather useful information and make an informed decision about your future that will lead to success and satisfaction.

Career counselling typically doesn't require more than 6 or 7 sessions.  It does, however, require clients to do research outside of sessions.  Counselling involves a thorough assessment of interests, personality, skills, values, dreams/aspirations, labour market information, etc.  A critical part of the process is directed help in integrating this information and making it meaningful for the client.  At the end, typically, people have a few satisfying options and are ready to move forward in the development of their career.
