Shirley Katz, Ph.D., RP, CCC Registered Psychotherapist @ Creativity Counselling
Please read this if you want to get a sense of who I really am and how I work in Psychotherapy and Counselling before booking. I am a verified expert of Marriage.com and a Body Image and Food Issues expert on Goodtherapy.org.
You have come for help and you know that it is really important to feel like someone understands you before their ideas or suggestions have an impact. That person has to genuinely care, but ultimately needs to do more then just listen. They need to catch and identify your emotional and behavioral patterns, your unhelpful beliefs and automatic assumptions, the things you learned that may be "normal" for you but not so helpful in your life or career, and not so easy to change on your own. You may need to take the time to explore where and why you learned these patterns, or just get on to the business of making change but you know you need someone to guide you do be able to make and sustain these changes.
I am an honest and direct person. Clients feel very connected pretty quickly because I am real and open-minded. I feel compelled to make a positive difference so I work hard together with my clients to set and reach measurable goals. I will challenge you when you need to think, feel, or do something differently and help you find the tools you need, and mobilize your resources. When what you need is just a caring supportive person, I know how to help you to feel stronger to face challenges, even those you cannot change, such as in the case of loss.
My personal background is diverse, my views are born of my own struggles and my ideas about wellness are heavily connected to creativity. I came to this career from many challenges. I was a high school "push out" with low self-esteem who was living on my own at 16. Always feeling different, with a myriad of interests, I worked in many sectors of business before returning to school as a mature student and earning awards and accolades in graduate school. During my training I also taught dance, published poetry, ran "alternative health" related events and worked in the entertainment industry. I lived in Cuba and learned Spanish. I am the mother of three creative kids.
My training: included Clinical Psychology and Assessment (Pathology Focus), Counselling Psychology, Vocational Rehabilitation and Career Counselling, Child and Youth Mental Health, Supervision, Program Development and Evaluation, etc. My research was focused on Eating Disorders as well as on the Experience of High School for Those Who Struggle. I am a published author on the subject of Body Image. At UBC and U of Calgary I taught and supervised graduate students in Counselling Psychology. I studied Multicultural Counselling, Learning, Biological Psychology, Career, Family and Couples, Assessment, and much more. I have presented on topics related to Eating Disorders, Relationships and Diversity Sensitivity, Workplace Stress and Coping, Communication, Assertiveness, etc. I taught and supervised graduate level counsellors at two Canadian universities. I have consulted on Body Image issues for the media as well as issues related to Gender identity.
My clinical methods: In my practice, I work within an Emotion Focused framework, drawing from CBT during the change process, but relationship is crucial and rapport is a priority as I am fundamentally a Humanist. I also work with Mindfulness philosophies and meditation practices. If you have any questions about the way I work with clients, personal or business, feel free to give me a call and set up an appointment so we can look at your background and expectations and create the best possible foundation for making lasting, meaningful change, according to your goals. Feel free to ask questions.
